When you are meeting new people or getting yourself introduced, it is important that you have some good conversation starters, as it will make you and the other person more relaxed and comfortable.
Most of us lack this basic social skill and tend to make a mess of the entire situation.
You might not be able to find the right words or topics to start a conversation and this can make you tongue tied. However you need not worry, as it is a skill that can be easily learned. There are certain clichés that we tend to use and these are best avoided.
Here are some tips to hopefully get your conversations rolling
- The most common conversational topics include talking about the weather, school or college, movies, songs, holidays, hobbies, food or any event that was recently in the news.
- Never choose one of those cheap pick up lines to impress anyone as it is bound to backfire. Most people are put off by those sleazy pick up lines. Learn to keep it simple and straight forward and do with some style of your own.
- If the situations allows do some background research about the person you are going to meet. Awareness about their likes and dislikes will help you start a conversation easily.
- Be your natural self and choose a topic that both of you can talk about in a comfortable manner. If the other person reacts positively to the topic that you had started, you can continue with it, otherwise it would be best to change the topic immediately.
- Do not try to use the same topics with every individual you meet. Everybody has different tastes, likes and dislikes and depending on the individual you meet, you should be able to make changes to your conversational starters.
